Ørnulf Opdahl (b. 1944 / Ålesund, Norway), had his breakthrough in the 1960s with figurative images with some abstraction. Images from the late 1960s show microscopic fabrications from an underwater world with associations with folk art. From the 1980s, a clearer figure is seen in his pictures with people in dreamlike landscapes, while in the 1990s he depicts pure natural impressions of the west coast; a main theme that is constantly refined and simplified against the abstract. He has renewed aspects of landscape painting, especially coastal nature and marine motifs, and places great emphasis on the material and the craftsmanship in his pictures.
Opdahl was a professor at the Norwegian Academy of Fine Arts in 1985–92. He has public works in the Storting, Telenor, Ålesund, Molde University College, Norges Bank and the University Library in Oslo. Opdahl is represented in, among others, the National Museum, the National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Bergen Art Museum, the Astrup Fearnly Museum and the Stenersens Collection.
