Kjell Nupen (b. 1955 / Norway), was educated at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo and at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf, Germany. Nupen had a breakthrough as a painter and graphic artist at a young age and has for many years been a prominent figure in Norwegian contemporary art, and he is recognized across many parts of the globe. He has performed a considerable number of public decorating assignments at home and abroad. He is represented at a number of Norwegian museums and collections.
Nupen was a romantic-oriented artist, and he emphasized and constantly explored the aesthetics and the purely workable aspects of painting and graphics. Former socially critical themes have had to give way to a more poetic and romantic attitude, with a stronger focus on the artistic tools. His craftsmanship and virtuosity in the execution are beyond doubt. The nup has almost become a term in this country. We are talking about Nupen blue (an atmospheric blue color made up of 40-50 layers of laser-glowing blue colors) and Nupen Park (Otterdalsparken in Kristiandsand) for examples.
